A Ride Through Gluten-Free Food on a Carnival Cruise

My week-long Carnival Cruise was delightful, flavorful, and fun. I am not celiac, but I have been gluten-free for about four years now because the fatigue from my fibromyalgia was taking over my life. Four years later, I am more awake and energetic, so it’s been worth it.

Navigating the buffets on Carnival was challenging. The “Choose Fun” motto didn’t always apply to my meals, so I mostly stuck to salads for lunch and eggs and sausage for breakfast. Dinner, however, was where I could finally choose fun. I had my own menu with many of the same options as my non-gluten-free friends and family. The catch? I had to order the night before. The upside was that I could look forward to my exact meal. The downside? Did I always know what I was going to want the next day? Honey, I knew what I wanted every day from the moment I got on that boat. I haven’t had the luxury of surprise when it comes to food in four years.

Some food highlights included the Voyager Brunch Burger—I'm a sucker for an egg on my burger—and trying crab for the first time, which was delicious despite my usual hesitance towards seafood. The baked Alaska, with its combination of cake and ice cream in a flaming dessert, was a memorable treat and a big reason I keep coming back to Carnival.

The little dinner shows were an incredibly enjoyable addition to the overall experience. Unfortunately, on the last day, I suspect I was given real pasta, which left me feeling severely unwell. I spent the rest of the day vomiting and sleeping it off, which was a rough end to an otherwise enjoyable trip.

Despite this mishap, I would still consider going back. We’ll be trying another cruise line next, and I’ll let you know if I get glutened there too. Overall, I’d rate the food experience a 7/10, with points lost mainly due to the gluten incident.

So, were they quick? Yes, if given enough notice. Were they careful? Yes, if asked to be. Was I glutened? Only once on a 7-day cruise, which is a win for me. Despite the challenges, my Carnival Cruise was delightful, flavorful, and fun.
